Most overflowing gutters are just full, and a cleaning ends it. If it's not, you hear that before you pay for one that won't hold.

Twice a year is the rule inland: once in spring after pollen season, once in late fall after the leaves drop. Shore homes are different. Salt air, wind-blown sand, and pine needles clog gutters faster, and a nor'easter can fill them in a single storm, so near the water we usually recommend three to four times a year. Overhanging trees push it up too. Gutter guards cut the frequency either way.
We do both as part of every cleaning. Debris gets removed by hand, then the whole system is flushed with water to confirm flow and catch any hidden clogs in the downspouts.
Yes, and it's usually the expensive kind of damage. When water can't flow it spills behind the gutter and rots the fascia, runs down the siding, and pools against the foundation. In winter it freezes into ice dams that push water up under the shingles. A cleaning is cheap next to any of that. (Wondering whether guards would end the problem? Usually debris blocking the trough or a clogged downspout, and a cleaning fixes most cases. If it still overflows once the system is clear, the cause is structural — a low spot, lost pitch, or a gutter undersized for the roof. Our gutter repair page walks through each cause and what fixes it.
